My long term interest in photographing outdoor ads has taught me about the material vulnerability of printed photos: they fade and wrinkle with weather, they’re attacked by street artists and provocateurs, they are often installed wrong or oddly juxtaposed to neighboring ads, and they are sometimes penetrated by windows, construction and city services.
For additional illusion and tension, I add real three dimensional elements to these works that mimic features of my original flat photos, using wrinkles, tears, cuts, or other textures. These alterations and how they morph the meaning of an ad are the subject of my Urban Portraits.
