Flushing Promenade Animal Alphabet

Queens, NY - 2002

The Parks Department of NYC commissioned me to do a playful piece for a 1/10 mile stretch of parkland that bordered Flushing Bay. The project consisted of a series of grey granite plinths with cast iron fencing in between. Each plinth was decorated with two carvings. The top one of an animal and the bottom one of a plant. The letter Y for example bore an animal carving of a Yak on top and below it, a plant carving of a Yucca. The carvings were done by a company in Barre Vermont that did a masterful job of caring using a combination of sandblasting, texturing and polishing.
