Cedar Square Manhole Covers

Boston, MA - 1994

For my first  Black History project I worked with five teenage boys who came after school to my studio. No girls were included because their moms wouldn’t let them travel alone far from home. The boys were hand picked by the Boston Board of Ed Art Department  and though they were very different in personality and life experiences, they were all very good artists. They drew the original designs, helped with the mold making and then came to the foundry when the man hole covers were cast in bronze. Both the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald newspapers did large articles on the project with great pics of the boys. They’re parents were very proud to have their sons featured in the newspapers. The high point of the project for me was when one of the boys eventually became an architect.
